Transformers
Transformers are an integral part of any business, and the reason for it couldn’t be more straightforward. The function of a transformer is to regulate the voltage – up or down – as needed by the business or commercial operation during the course of electricity usage.
When the transformer works correctly, they don’t change the electrical frequency – that is the alternator’s job – working with AC (alternating current). A transformer’s primary job is acting as a regulator, serving in many capacities.
Depending on business size, a factory, commercial operation, or any other facility can have many transformers in their systems. If you have had a company like ours, Integrity Electricians, install your transformers, they will last many years.
While transformers have components, they don’t have moving parts, hence the long service life. But, they are a cautionary tale. You can’t have someone with limited ability and expertise install them; you need a commercial electrician, like our team at Integrity Electricians.
Commercial Transformers
At Integrity Electricians, we have experience and expertise in installing all of the different transformers on the market, and we can help you choose the type of transformer you need for the required application.
- Ventilated, Dry-Type Transformers – They are used primarily for indoor electrical systems and are the most common type of transformer installed.
- Sealed, Dry-Type Transformers – They are the same as the ventilated transformer but can also be used outdoors. If your work environment has particulates swirling in the air, these transformers are the way to go.
- Cast-Coil Transformers – this transformer is the one of choice if your facility has lingering or excess moisture in the air.
- Non Ventilated Dry-Type Transformers – are enclosed units and are used in non-standard applications as required.
- Oil-Filled Transformers – are predominantly used in high-temperature environments. Mineral oil is used as an insulator in the winding inside tanks to protect the transformer from heat degradation.
Choosing A Transformer
As your commercial electrician, we at Integrity Electricians will perform a comprehensive analysis of your facility, determine your needs and recommend the suitable transformer to serve in the right capacity to keep your business humming.

Sizing Transformers
It is important to size a transformer correctly. Otherwise, you will encounter problems down the line. If the size isn’t exact, the transformer will have a shorter life expectancy and difficulty handling the required system loads. This process is a now-and-later proposition for any business.
The commercial electrician will use an equation for the transformer load rating – kVA; and they need to account for any future growth of the business they are working with.
-
Code Regulations
When we install a transformer at a business, you can depend on us to meet the stringent requirements that the province of Ontario has set down for electrical regulations. Depending on the type of transformer installed will determine what regulations we will have to meet.
Our team has deep knowledge of the electrical code for transformer installation, and we work to the letter of the regulations. Two reasons to hire a commercial electrician are to prevent code violations that result in fines and the removal of an incorrectly installed transformer.

Safety First
Working with electricity in a commercial or industrial environment is a hazardous job. Without training, knowledge and experience, you can lose your life with one false step. Working with electricity isn’t for a DIYer; no, you need licensed, certified professionals to carry out whatever tasks need fulfilling.
Improperly installed transformers can lead to a host of problems that are completely avoidable when you hire a commercial electrician. Don’t settle for less; call on us at Integrity Electricians to complete your project right the first time.
